With a wide variety of health impacts and more news becoming available on them everyday, antioxidants are an important part of today's health. Find out their background and what makes them worth learning about.

Hardly a week goes by without news of antioxidants' health-promoting benefits. Experts believe these nutritional substances may help prevent heart disease, fight certain cancers, ward off dementia, and even slow certain aging processes.

There are thousands of antioxidants found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, meats, poultry, and fish. Even foods once not known for being especially healthful, such as chocolate, coffee, and red wine, are now recognized as potent delivery systems for beneficial antioxidants....

We need oxygen to live. It travels from the lungs to every corner of the body, helping cells metabolize food into energy. But oxygen has a downside. Normally, the molecules in our cells have a full set of electrons, which keep them stable--think of them as a fortress surrounding a castle. But when these molecules come into contact with oxygen (i.e., they are "oxidized") they lose an electron, converting to an unstable type of molecule known as a free radical.

"Free radicals, if left unchecked, assault whatever cell constituents are nearby, including proteins, fats, and DNA," says Joe Vinson, PhD, a professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton. "Once those molecules are attacked, their structure and function are changed and they don't work as well."

Ingeniously, Mother Nature created an instant free-radical fix. Antioxidants disable free radicals by donating electrons to replace those lost during oxidation. Some antioxidants can be manufactured by your body; others must be obtained from food....

Are Your Personal Care Products Really Organic?
Popular body care products marketed as organic will be disappearing from the shelves at New Leaf Community Market (San Diego) for failing to meet the company's standards.

"I want really organic," Mariana Friedman, body care product coordinator for the local organic pioneer, said Monday. "The industry has really lax standards."

The products being discontinued are targets of a lawsuit filed Monday by the company that makes Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps.

The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, accused 10 companies and two industry groups of selling and promoting soaps, lotions and other products that are manufactured using conventionally grown crops or chemicals derived from petroleum.

Dr. Bronner's alleges it's unfair to label such products organic and is asking a judge to prevent Hain Celestial Group Inc., Estee Lauder Inc. and the other companies named in the lawsuit from doing so.

"There is widespread abuse of the word 'organic' throughout the industry and it's spiraling out of control," said Dr. Bronner's company president David Bronner. "It's an industry based on marketing and hype, and the organic labels are a form of corrosive marketing."

Bronner said a negotiated settlement before the lawsuit was filed broke down over some of the companies' refusal to stop the use of petrochemicals in products bearing organic labels......

Among the products that New Leaf is discontinuing: Alba Botanica Passionfruit Body Wash, Alba Replenishing Shampoo, Nutribiotic Supershower Gel Shampoo, California Baby Supersensitive Bubble Bath, Giovanni Smooth as Silk Shampoo, Healthy Times Honeysuckle Baby Bath and Healthy Times Pansyflower Baby Shampoo, Nature's Gate Awapuhi Shampoo, and Nature's Gate Fruitblend Liquid Soap....
